The Starry Night Over the Rhone
“The Starry Night Over the Rhone” is an oil painting created by the Dutch Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in September 1888. It is also known by other names such as “Starry Night Over the Rhône” and “Starry Night on the Rhone.” The artwork is currently housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France.
This painting marks van Gogh’s second exploration of nocturnal scenes following his earlier work, “The Starry Night.” The starlight in the sky and the reflections of lights along the riverbank harmonize with each other. The stars in the night sky are surrounded by their own halos, forming circular patterns. The composition portrays the distance and positions of the stars through the varying intensity and spaced arrangement of warm-colored lights. Van Gogh’s unique visual aesthetics are reflected in the way he manipulates and depicts the play of light in this piece.

This Van Gogh masterpiece is housed in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands. Interestingly, the Kröller-Müller Museum boasts the second-largest collection of Van Gogh’s artworks globally, following closely behind the Van Gogh Museum.
For Van Gogh, the cypress tree held profound symbolism, particularly in the context of Provence. “The cypresses still preoccupy me,” he wrote in a letter to his brother Theo. “I’d like to do something with them like the canvases of sunflowers because it astonishes me that no one has yet done them as I see them. They’re beautiful in line and proportions like an Egyptian obelisk. And the green has such a distinguished quality.”
Before leaving the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh created “Country Road in Provence by Night.” This piece is not a depiction of a real landscape but rather a product of his imagination, perhaps serving as a final contemplation on Saint-Rémy and a summary of what he observed during his stay in Provence.
During his time in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh experimented extensively with color and brushstrokes. Many of his works from this period feature graceful, swirling lines, and this painting is no exception. The short, rhythmic strokes of the undulating lines contribute vibrant energy to the composition.

Vincent van Gogh was deeply influenced by luminism and the works of Delacroix, emphasizing his own subjective world. He aimed to integrate form and material, light and shadow, atmosphere, and depth, striving to represent these elements comprehensively. This approach drove him to depict intense sunlight boldly, challenging the one-sided portrayal of impressionism and significantly influencing later movements such as Fauvism and Expressionism. Van Gogh’s masterpieces, such as “Starry Night” and “Sunflowers,” have earned a place among the most renowned, widely recognized, and valuable artworks globally. On July 29, 1890, troubled by mental illness, Van Gogh tragically ended his young life at the picturesque banks of the Auvers-sur-Oise in France, at the age of 37.
In his early works, influenced by impressionism, Van Gogh twice exhibited his art in cafes and restaurants, aiming to connect with the working class. Growing tired of life in Paris, he moved to Arles in the south of France, where he began to pursue more expressive techniques. Inspired by the avant-garde movement and Japanese art, he boldly explored a style that allowed him to freely express inner emotions, seeking the inherent expressiveness of line and color, as well as the decorative and symbolic aspects of his compositions.
